Numi earned its following by treating a calculator like a note: you type English-ish math, it answers on the right, and the session stays editable. People who search for a Numi alternative are usually not angry at it. They are tired of leaving the thing they were writing in order to do the math that belonged in that paragraph.
That is the slice Hejour covers. The calculator is the day's page. Inline math is not a plugin and not a sidebar. It is the same text you already export as Markdown.
What people actually use Numi for
Strip the landing page down to the daily habit and most Numi sessions are four moves: add some numbers, convert a unit, convert a currency, reuse a value. Hejour does those in the note.
| Numi | Hejour | |
|---|---|---|
| Line-by-line results | Yes — dedicated pad | Yes — after = on the day |
| Variables | x = 10 | x: 10, then use x |
| Units | Yes | Length, volume, mass, time, storage, temperature |
| Live currency + crypto | Yes | Yes, optional; local math works with it off |
| Percent | of / on / natural phrases | 15% is 0.15 — write price * 15% |
| Time zones, hex/bin, date math | Yes | No |
| Where it lives | Its own window | Today's note, next to todos and the calendar |
| iPhone | No first-party app | Same days, via iCloud |
| Price | Paid calculator | Free to start; Pro $19 once |
The same motion, on the page you keep
flights: $240 + $180
hotel: 4 * $95
buffer: (flights + hotel) * 10%
trip: flights + hotel + buffer
trip to EUR =In Numi that pad is the document. In Hejour it sits under this morning's heading, above [] buy travel insurance, with the flight event already on the page from your calendar. When you search next month, the total is still attached to the day you decided it.
What Numi still does better
Be precise, because comparison posts that pretend otherwise waste everyone's afternoon. Numi speaks more calculator dialects: time zones, numeral systems, richer percentage English (20% of $10, 5% on $30), a huge currency list, Windows and Linux, a CLI. If those are why you open it, stay. Hejour will not grow a hex mode to win a table.
Hejour is for the other Numi user — the one whose pad is really a working note that happens to contain math. That person should not keep two homes.
